Аннотация
| American Culture: the Cowboy and the American West— When Boris Yeltsin visited the United States in the early 90s, photographs of him exuberantly wearing a cowboy hat were published all over the globe. That hat was immediately recognized the world over as a symbol of America. The American cowboy, often said to symbolize the American values of individuality and self-reliance, is an internationally known icon. Western movies, songs, and books have formed stereotypes, both positive and negative, about the cowboy. But what about “real” cowboys? Do they really exist? How do they compare to their romantic fictional counterparts? In Kansas, the working cowboy is alive and well. This lecture will discuss folklore and the modern reality of this unique American character.
